Weather Vanes Story Resources Part 6

Seraph: a six winged celestial being in the heirarchy of Angels
There is a great deal of histocial/religious writing and depiction of the Seraph ( singular of Seraphim)

To learn more about them try:
www.seraphim.com    or   www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seraph

For a present day reference this clip from "Sister Act" with the song Salve Regina speaks of both the Seraphim and Cherubim classes of angels.

Our second weather vane today:

A weathervane of this nature would certainly have been found over the small gun shops of the pre-Civil War era. Hunting retreats, gun clubs and others possibly enjoying bragging rights of. their marksmanship might have had the wind marked by such striking art.

Connecticut history is filled with triumphs and failures of the  weapon industry. As a key state in the industrial revolution one of the most heralded names in firearms was from Hartford, CT., Samuel Colt. For a look at the history of the weapon line he developed and his part in Connecticut History look here:
www.Coltsmfg.com       or   www.museumofcthistory.org/colt.asp

Remington was another Connecticut weapon manufacturer their history is here:
www.remington.com/Pages/Our-Company-History.aspx

Winchester is another name synonimous with weapons and the wild west. Here is a link to more on the Winchester rifles of Connecticut:
 www.winchesterguns.com/customerservice/qna/detail.asp?id=243

Flintlock Guns were common weapon of the Revloution to see a costumed demonstration of how to fire a Flintlock check out this you-tube:

Hope some of these resources will help you bring a story to life. The Museum of CT. History is a great place to visit, there is so much to see from our past. There are many books out on the guns manufactured in Connecticut.

This is the 6th of the Weather Vane Series of resource posts here is the link to the previous posts:

Mike Lockett :Tales and Fables East Meets West

Another incredible collection of stories from Mike Lockett. Plenty  of time to down load this from CD Baby ( www.cdbaby.com ) for a gift for the holidays or for the long car ride over the river and through the woods.

The ox and frog, the hare are accompanied by all their friends on this journey.

Tales From Around the World with Mike Lockett

I just arrived back home from the most amazing trip around the world!

I never did pack a suitcase. I collected no stamps in my passport. I didn't get any coins from foreign lands. My travels were all done right here at my computer while I listened to the Tales From Around The World a storytelling CD from Mike Lockett the Normal Storyteller. www.mikelockett.com and available for download through  www.cdbaby.com

It's that time of year when libraries are kicking off Summer Reading Programs. This years theme in many libraries is "One World Many Stories". How perfect a fit the CD Tales From Around the World  is to that theme. The story adventure begins with  a classic Anansi story from Ghana, we were right there the sounds of the great river slipping past and the spirits singing. Soon I was swept away through Russia, England and Ireland. I spent time with a lizard and a deer down Mexico way and moved round the far side of the globe again before stopping for my favorite in the collection a story from France " The Wooden Shoe Christmas". I left that snowy scene and in moments was in the sunny tropics for another Anansi Spider tale.

Mike Lockett pulled out all the stops as the saying goes, this CD storytelling collection done with sound effects, bits of music, voiced dialects, and delivered just like you were sitting in front of him made for great listening. It is a great travel CD in two ways, one for its broad sampling of world stories, the other pop Tales From Around The World, in the car CD player on the way to vacation and collect some back seat Peace!

Stop by  Mike Lockett's website maybe you can catch a live performance of Tales From Around the World  with the Normal Storyteller near you!

Review: Tales From The Hills By Mike Lockett

Tales From the Hills  A Storytelling CD by Mike Locket

The soft mountain music eases us into the CD and whisks us away to a front porch nestled along a creek bed in the cusp of a Appalachian mountain. A tail of wood smoke curls down from a chimney and carries the scent of old apple wood and the rocker is squeaking out a rhythm old as time.

The stories of Appalachia are as old as the people's history and are timeless lessons delivered in a slow easy style. Jack a predominant character is up to his usual hi jinks. Somehow I can almost see the dusty footfalls as Lazy Jack tries to carry  a donkey on his back all the way home.  Jack's feet and the hind feet of the donkey dragging down a dusty road in a century old tale.

Mike Lockett is known as the Normal Storyteller. His work is not normal, it is extraordinary in its delivery of simple  classic stories told like he was on the spot the day the event happened. The CD Tales From The Hills has nine stories on it. With one story a night you could get the kids to rush to bed just to listen for a whole week and then some. Let Grandpa listen and use it to cue some family stories you won't believe have been hidden all these years. Your turkey hunting friends are bound to love the tale about Jack's hunt with only one bullet. You see there really is a little something for everyone on the CD.

Don't think you need to rush to the store to find this.  What is not old fashioned is Mike's easy way to acquire his story CD's. Just go visit www.cdbaby.com and you can download the CD right to your computer and burn it to a disc. It is so easy. In just 5 minutes you could be relaxing on a front porch listening to wonderful stories.
A real treat would be to catch a live performance of the Normal Storyteller Mike Lockett. Check out his website www.mikelockett.com   for more information on where you can hear him up close and personal - just like you were on that porch in the mountains.
Ichabod the donkey is all ears as he listens to the story of Lazy Jack and the donkey.

Christian Storytelling Conference Coming- My Photo Inspirations

My friends Buck Creacy and  Dr. Michael Lockett are part of the team that organizes this conference. They point out this is not performance storytelling but a conference on story as a communication tool.  I suggest you have a look at the list of who is telling and check out their web page. I was recently in a workshop Dr.Mike Lockett was leading, it was fun, educational and inspirational, I left with tools for telling and learning bible stories in a quick easy manner and  a warm memory of a wonderful workshop. Check it out!

Below some moments of inspiration I captured that I wanted to share with you.
